Pick and pack software is the layer that runs the packing bench in an ecommerce warehouse: it decides which order a packer works on next, tells them what to pick, checks that the right items went into the box, prints the right carrier label and records the dispatch. It sits between the order management system that owns the order and the carrier that owns the parcel. For a brand that has moved fulfilment in-house, or is about to, it is the software that decides whether ten thousand orders a month feel like a process or a pile.
This guide covers what the software actually does, how it differs from a full warehouse management system and from outsourced "pick and pack services", what the main vendors publish as prices, and the questions that separate a packing bench that runs itself from one that needs a supervisor standing behind it.
Short answer: Pick and pack software must do five jobs: queue orders by carrier cutoff and priority, guide picking, scan-verify contents against the order, print the carrier label without a portal login, and dispatch to the right carrier. Among the vendors that publish prices, ShipStation includes basic warehouse management from $29.99 a month and pick-to-tote and mobile picking on its $349.99 Premium tier; Veeqo's shipping plan is free and its digital picking arrives on an Inventory plan from $19 a month; Ordoro's shipping app is free with inventory from $349 a month; Packiyo publishes one figure, $949 a month for its 3PL plan. ShipHero and ShipBob WMS quote. Pango runs pick and pack as one module of an agentic operations platform, with a free plan and pricing by order volume.
Pick and pack software vs WMS vs shipping software vs 3PL
Three neighbouring categories cause most of the confusion.
Pick and pack services are not software. When a search says "pick and pack services" it means a third-party logistics provider that stores your stock and packs your orders for a per-order fee. That is the outsourcing decision covered in what is a 3PL. This article is about running the bench yourself.
A warehouse management system (WMS) owns inventory locations, receiving, putaway, cycle counts and replenishment as well as picking and packing. Pick and pack software is the outbound slice of a WMS: it starts when an order is released and ends when a labelled parcel leaves the dock. Small and mid-sized brands often need the outbound slice long before they need bin-level inventory control. The dividing lines are drawn in OMS vs WMS vs TMS.
Shipping software prints labels and compares rates. It has become the default home for pick and pack features because every shipping vendor eventually added a pick list and a barcode scan step. That is why ShipStation, Veeqo and Ordoro appear below alongside the WMS vendors: for most DTC brands the packing bench and the label printer are the same workstation. How the label side is priced is in multi-carrier shipping software pricing.
The five jobs, in the order the parcel meets them
1. Order queuing. Which order does the packer take next? A first-in-first-out queue is the default and the wrong answer: an express order with a carrier pickup in twenty minutes must jump a standard order placed an hour earlier. Good software scores every order on carrier cutoff, service level, complexity and stock location, and re-sorts the queue as conditions change.
2. Picking guidance. Pick lists, batch picking (several orders in one walk), pick-to-tote and mobile scanning on a handheld. The measure is walk distance per order and mis-picks per thousand.
3. Scan verification. Every item is scanned against the order before it goes in the box, and the station blocks label printing until the contents match. This is the single feature that pays for the software, because a wrong-item shipment costs a replacement parcel, a return label and a support ticket, and often the customer.
4. Label printing. The carrier label should print at the bench, in the right format, without a packer logging into a carrier portal or choosing a service. Pre-generated labels, printed on scan of the last item, remove the pause at the end of every order.
5. Multi-carrier dispatch. The system chooses the carrier and service for each parcel on cost, speed and destination, produces the manifest, and records the handover. Brands with more than one carrier need this at the bench, not in a separate tool. The routing logic behind it is in what is multi-carrier shipping.
A sixth job hides behind the five: exceptions. Printer jams, a carrier API outage in the last hour before pickup, a stock-out discovered mid-pick, an address that fails validation. Software that stops and waits for a person at each of these is software with a supervisor's salary attached.

Prices are from each vendor's own pricing page or Shopify App Store listing, fetched 12 September 2026, in the currency published. Shopify ratings on the same date: ShipStation 4.2 from 702 reviews, Veeqo 3.9 from 129, Ordoro 4.8 from 41, ShipHero 4.3 from 116.
What the prices do not say
The packing features sit high on the ladder. ShipStation is the clearest example: pick lists and packing slips are available broadly, but pick-to-tote, mobile picking and auto-routing are Premium features, and Premium starts at $349.99 a month for 50 shipments and reaches $7,499.99 for 100,000. A brand that wanted ShipStation for labels and grows into wanting it for the bench pays a different product's price.
Free is the label margin. Veeqo's shipping plan is free because, in its own words, "We make a small commission on labels purchased through Veeqo". Ordoro's shipping app is free on the same model. The picking features in both are on the paid inventory tiers, priced by monthly order volume.
WMS vendors quote. Packiyo publishes a single number, for 3PLs. ShipHero's Shopify listing is free to install with "additional charges", and its site publishes no price list. ShipBob WMS is quote-only. None of that is unusual for warehouse software, and it means the true comparison for a mid-sized brand is a sales call against a published SaaS tier.
Setup time is a price. ShipBob WMS offers "white-glove implementation", which is a service and a timeline. Packiyo lists "hands on onboarding and setup" on its Starter tier. Ask every vendor how long from contract to first parcel, and who configures the stations.
How to choose: seven questions
- Can a packer print the label without opening a carrier portal? If the answer involves logging in, the bench has a pause in it on every order.
- Does the station block the label when the scan does not match the order? Scan verification that only warns is not verification.
- How is the queue ordered? By time placed, or by carrier cutoff and priority?
- What happens when the printer jams or the carrier API goes down at 4 pm? The honest answer is what your team will live with in peak.
- Can two stations run different layouts? A single-SKU station and a gift-wrap station need different screens.
- Which tier holds the features above, and what does that tier cost at your peak-month volume? Model December, not April.
- Does it stop at the dock, or does it follow the parcel? A bench tool that does not see delivery exceptions or returns leaves those to another system and another login.
The last question is where the category is moving. Packing is one step in the order's life; the delivery promise made at checkout, the tracking page the customer refreshes and the return that comes back a week later are the same order. Running the bench in one tool and the rest in three others is the architecture most brands are trying to leave.
How Pango does pick and pack
Pango's pick and pack module is built around configurable stations: "Fully customizable pack stations with minimal clicks. Configure label printing, packing workflows, and dispatch". The station designer is drag-and-drop, with barcode fields, label preview, order details and notes placed where each role needs them, and layouts saved as templates. The five jobs are handled as follows, in Pango's own words from the product FAQ:
- Queuing: agents assign every incoming order "a priority score based on carrier pickup deadlines, shipping SLA, order complexity, and item location in the warehouse", and express orders with a near cutoff "jump to the front automatically".
- Scan verification: "Every item is scan-verified against the order before it goes in the box", and "the parcel cannot proceed to label printing until the contents are correct."
- Label printing: "Pango pre-generates shipping labels in the background as soon as an order enters the queue", so one click prints to any connected printer, thermal or A4, "with no carrier portal logins, no format selection, no waiting."
- Dispatch: every station can ship with any connected carrier; Pango "auto-selects the optimal carrier for each order based on cost, speed, and destination" and generates the correct label format.
- Exceptions: "If a printer jams, orders reroute to the next available station. If a carrier API goes down, the system switches to an alternative carrier and regenerates labels. If stock runs out mid-pick, the agent splits the order and queues the remaining items."
Setup is described as "hours, not weeks": connect the store (Shopify, WooCommerce or API), link carrier accounts, design the stations. The module shares one order record with Pango's delivery management, tracking and returns, so the parcel packed at the bench is the same object the customer tracks and, if needed, returns. Pricing starts with a free plan and scales by order volume, with no per-label meter; the pricing page has the current tiers. For the label and routing side of the comparison, see the ShipStation alternative and EasyPost alternative pages.
The bottom line
Pick and pack software is judged at the bench: does the next order arrive in the right sequence, does the scan catch the wrong size, does the label print without a login, does the right carrier get the parcel, and does anyone have to stand behind the packer when something breaks. The published prices put the real packing features on the upper tiers or behind a quote. Model your peak month, ask the seven questions, and prefer a tool that follows the parcel past the dock.
