OMS: the system of record for the order
The OMS is the single clean record of an order from checkout to delivery. It captures what was bought, allocates it to a fulfillment location, and tracks its status.
When it works, support, finance, and the warehouse all read the same record. When it does not, each team has its own version of the truth and they argue about which is right.
The OMS is the closest thing to a spine in your stack. But it does not run the warehouse and it does not book the carrier.
WMS: the system that runs the warehouse floor
The WMS runs the physical building. It knows which shelf holds which SKU, directs pickers on the fastest path, and confirms the pack. Its job is throughput and accuracy inside four walls.
A good WMS shaves seconds off every pick and stops the wrong item from going in the box. It is deeply operational. It cares about bins, zones, and labor, not about the customer's tracking page.
If you use a 3PL, they most likely run the WMS for you. You never touch it directly.
TMS: the system that plans and books transport
The TMS handles the move. It compares carrier rates, picks a service level, books the label, and plans routes. On the enterprise end it manages freight and full truckloads too.
For a DTC brand, the TMS is where carrier choice and rate logic live. It decides that this order goes ground with a regional carrier and that one goes express with a national one.
The TMS knows a lot about carriers. It knows far less about the customer waiting at the door.
Where the three overlap and where handoffs break
The three systems touch at two seams, and both leak.
The first seam is OMS to WMS. The order says "ship this," the warehouse has to pick it, and the handover time in between is often invisible. A slow handover is a delay nobody sees until the customer does.
The second seam is WMS to TMS to carrier. The parcel gets a label, a carrier scans it, and now status updates come back in that carrier's private vocabulary. Multiply that across carriers and your OMS holds a mess of mismatched labels. That mismatch is where WISMO tickets are born.
