Correios is Brazil's national postal operator and the default last mile for most parcels entering or moving around the country, including the huge volume arriving from Chinese marketplaces. Its tracking is in Portuguese, and the phrases are formal: every status starts with "objeto", the object. This guide translates each Correios status into plain English, in the order a parcel moves through them, and marks the ones that put a deadline on you.
Short answer: A normal Correios parcel runs "objeto postado" (posted), "objeto em trânsito - por favor aguarde" (in transit, please wait), "objeto saiu para entrega ao destinatário" (out for delivery) and "objeto entregue ao destinatário" (delivered). International parcels add a customs stage first. "Carteiro não atendido" means the postman found nobody home, "objeto aguardando retirada" means the parcel is waiting for you at a Correios unit with a collection deadline, and "objeto devolvido ao remetente" means it has been sent back. If a status has not changed for about five business days, that is the point to ask.
Correios statuses in English
| Portuguese status | English meaning | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Objeto postado | Posted. Registered in Correios' system and waiting to move | None. If posted after the branch cut-off, processing starts the next business day |
| Objeto em trânsito - por favor aguarde | In transit, please wait. Moving between Correios units, location updated as it goes | None |
| Objeto encaminhado | Forwarded from one unit to the next | None |
| Objeto saiu para entrega ao destinatário | Out for delivery to the addressee | Be reachable |
| Objeto entregue ao destinatário | Delivered to the addressee | Check the detail if you do not have it |
| Carteiro não atendido / Tentativa de entrega não efetuada | The postman could not deliver; nobody answered or the attempt could not be completed | Expect a new attempt or a collection notice |
| Objeto aguardando retirada no endereço indicado | Waiting for collection at the Correios unit shown | Collect with ID before the deadline |
| Endereço incorreto | Incorrect address | Contact the shop to correct it quickly |
| Objeto devolvido ao remetente | Returned to the sender | Contact the shop for a reship or refund |
| Objeto não encontrado na base de dados | Tracking number not found yet | Wait a day; new numbers take time to appear |
The normal Correios sequence
Objeto postado. The parcel has been registered in Correios' systems and is waiting to be dispatched. Brazilian logistics blogs that explain these statuses note the variant "objeto postado após o horário limite da agência", posted after the branch's cut-off time, which simply means processing begins the next business day.
Objeto em trânsito - por favor aguarde. In transit, please wait. The parcel has left the posting unit and is moving toward the destination, with its location updated periodically. Brazil is large, so this stage can repeat several times as the parcel crosses distribution centres; the general version of that pattern is in why a package is stuck in transit.
Objeto saiu para entrega ao destinatário. Out for delivery to the addressee, also seen as "objeto saiu para rota de entrega". Delivery is expected the same day. See what "out for delivery" means for the general rules.
Objeto entregue ao destinatário. Delivered. If you do not have it, check with household members, the building's reception or porteiro, and the recorded recipient before raising a claim, as laid out in package says delivered but not received.
International parcels: the customs stage
Parcels arriving from abroad show a customs sequence before the domestic statuses: reception into Brazil, customs inspection, and, where import tax is due, a payment request. Brazil taxes many low-value imports, so a parcel can wait at this stage until the tax is paid through Correios' channels. The generic mechanics and timings are in package stuck in customs and how long customs clearance takes. Parcels from Chinese marketplaces reach Correios after a long international leg whose own statuses are explained in China Post tracking statuses, AliExpress tracking statuses and Shein tracking statuses.
The statuses that need you
Carteiro não atendido / Tentativa de entrega não efetuada. A delivery attempt failed. Correios normally reattempts or moves the parcel to a unit for collection, and the next status says which.
Objeto aguardando retirada no endereço indicado. The parcel is waiting for you at the Correios unit named in the tracking, with a collection deadline. Collect it with identification; miss the window and it becomes "devolvido ao remetente". The same mechanic across carriers is in what "awaiting collection" means.
Endereço incorreto. The address could not be used. The shop has to correct it with Correios; the faster that happens, the less likely a return.
Objeto devolvido ao remetente. Returned to sender after failed attempts, an uncollected parcel or an address problem. Ask the shop to reship or refund.
How long is normal
Domestic, between major cities: a few business days is common for standard services, longer for the north and interior. International: the customs stage adds days, and a tax payment adds however long you take to pay. The practical rule Brazilian logistics guides give is that a parcel with no movement for more than five business days is the point to contact Correios or the seller, and a new tracking number that shows "não encontrado" can take a day to appear in the system.
The merchant view
Selling into Brazil means your customer reads "objeto em trânsito - por favor aguarde" for a week and wonders. Selling from Brazil to abroad means your foreign customer reads Portuguese. Both produce the same ticket. The fix is to translate the feed into one plain set of milestones, message the customs and collection statuses proactively in the customer's language, and treat "devolvido ao remetente" as the start of a returns flow rather than a surprise on the warehouse dock.
Pango normalises Correios and 100+ other carriers into one milestone set, sends the "waiting for collection until Friday" and "import tax due" messages automatically, and opens the return when the carrier marks a parcel for return. The support cost it removes is in what is WISMO.
The bottom line
Correios' statuses are literal once translated: posted, in transit, out for delivery, delivered, with customs in front for imports and collection or return statuses when delivery fails. Watch "aguardando retirada" and "endereço incorreto", because both have a clock. For merchants, translation plus proactive messaging on those two turns a Portuguese tracking feed into a quiet inbox.
