Posti Tracking: Every Status Explained in English

Posti is Finland's national carrier, and its tracking speaks in short status badges: Waiting, In process, In transit, Available for pickup, Delivered. Each one has a precise meaning, a normal duration, and a point where waiting stops being the right move. Every status phrase below is Posti's own wording from its tracking pages and its published event dictionary, and every deadline comes from Posti's own help pages. For how Pango's order tracking reads the same scans from the store side, see the end.

Short answer: "Waiting" means Posti does not have the parcel yet, so pressure belongs on the sender. "In process" and "In transit" are normal movement. "Available for pickup" starts a short clock: most parcels wait at a Posti Parcel Locker or outlet for 5 days before going back. "Delivered" for a small parcel can mean your mailbox, so check there first. If tracking on an international parcel stops updating before it reaches Finland, Posti's own advice is to contact the sender.

The statuses, in Posti's own words

Status you seePosti's explanationWhat to do
Waiting"We are waiting for the parcel from the sender."Nothing is late yet. The label exists, the parcel has not been handed over. Same idea as pre-advice.
In process"We have your parcel, and it will now begin its way to you."Normal. First physical scan.
In transit"The parcel is on its way."Normal movement between terminals.
Arrived in the country"The parcel is waiting to move on to customs clearance."Applies to parcels from outside the EU. See the customs section.
In delivery"On its way! We'll deliver the parcel to your door."Delivery day. Home deliveries that fail go to a pickup point.
Available for pickup"Ready for pickup! The parcel can now be picked up at [the pickup point]."The storage clock starts. Most parcels: 5 days.
Delivered"Your parcel has been delivered."For small parcels, check the mailbox and the door first.

Behind these badges, Posti publishes a full event dictionary. The events you will most often see in detailed view: "Electronic pre-advice" ("Item has been registered"), "Arrival to Finland" ("Item arrived in the destination country."), "Out for delivery", "Exception handling" ("A deviation has been detected in the item's delivery. Delivery may be delayed."), and "Return of undelivered" ("The item has been returned to the sender.").

Customs: the status chain that stalls parcels

Parcels from outside the EU pass through Finnish customs, and Posti's tracking narrates it precisely:

  1. "The parcel has arrived in the country. Before customs clearance, we will check that the sender has provided the information needed."
  2. "The parcel is waiting for customs clearance. Please clear it at tulli.fi and also pay Posti's handling fee, if required." This one waits for you, not for Posti.
  3. "The parcel has cleared customs and is on its way."

If a parcel sits at step 2, the fix is doing the clearance at tulli.fi, not more waiting. The general version of this problem is covered in package stuck in customs.

Pickup deadlines: the 5-day clock

Posti shortened locker and service-point storage to five days from 1 October 2025, noting that "over 97% of Posti's parcels are already being picked up within five days." The current storage times from Posti's pickup page:

  • Parcels at a Posti Parcel Locker or Posti outlet: 5 days
  • Parcels that were unsuccessfully delivered home: 5 days
  • Parcels announced by letter: 9 days
  • Parcels arriving or returned from abroad: 14 days
  • Letters collected from Posti: 14 days

You can buy more time: "You can extend the pickup time by up to 14 days from the original last pickup date. The service costs €1.90."

Miss the deadline and the return is real: "If you haven't picked up your item by the last pickup date, we'll return it to the sender." The sender pays the return trip, and a returned parcel can still be redeemed for about three months, "by paying the redemption and handling fees, starting from €10." The wider pattern is in awaiting collection meaning.

Failed home delivery

Posti does not re-run failed home deliveries by default: "If we're unable to get hold of you and deliver the item to your home, we will take the item to the nearest pickup location for pickup. We will notify you of this via OmaPosti, SMS or email." Oversized parcels get a phone call for a new delivery window instead. Small parcels that fit no mailbox are left at the door. If tracking says delivered and there is no parcel, Posti's first advice is literal: "If the delivery method is Small Parcel, it may have been placed in your mailbox. Please check there first!" See also attempted delivery meaning.

When to stop waiting

  • Domestic parcels: Posti's stated home-delivery window is "2–5 business days from dispatch." Quiet tracking inside that window is normal.
  • International, not yet in Finland: Posti's own tracking says it plainly: "Your parcel is still on its way to Finland. Please wait – if tracking doesn't update, contact the sender." The sender opens the inquiry with the origin carrier.
  • Lost or damaged: "If there is no sign of your item, contact our customer service to submit a clarification request." Either the sender or the recipient can file it, but compensation goes to whoever paid for transport, which "is almost always the sender."

Posti, Itella and the names on the label

Same company. Itella Corporation changed its name to Posti Group Corporation on 1 January 2015, and the Itella name still serves as Posti's brand in the Baltics. If a Finnish shipment shows Itella scans, it is the same network. For how Nordic neighbours name the same journey, see PostNord tracking statuses and Bring tracking statuses.

The merchant view

A Finnish customer's "where is my order" ticket usually maps to one of three states: still with the sender ("Waiting"), stuck in customs (step 2 above), or five days from being returned ("Available for pickup"). Pango normalizes Posti's events into the same milestones as the 10 to 115 statuses other carriers use, so the pickup deadline can trigger a reminder before the return trip happens instead of a WISMO ticket after it.

The bottom line

Posti's statuses are unusually plain-spoken: they tell you whose move it is. "Waiting" means the sender's, customs step 2 means yours, and "Available for pickup" means yours with a 5-day clock on it. For brands shipping into Finland, those deadlines are operational triggers, not trivia. See the post-purchase operations platform and book a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how Pango works, and what switching looks like.

The parcel is at a Posti Parcel Locker or outlet waiting for you. Most parcels are stored for 5 days, then returned to the sender. You can extend the pickup time by up to 14 days for €1.90.

Posti has the shipment's data but not the parcel: "We are waiting for the parcel from the sender." If it stays that way for days, the delay is at the sender's end, not Posti's.

The step that usually takes longest is yours: when tracking says the parcel "is waiting for customs clearance", Posti is waiting for you to clear it at tulli.fi and pay any handling fee. After clearance the parcel moves normally.

Check the mailbox and the door first, since small parcels are delivered there. If it is genuinely missing, contact Posti customer service. A clarification request can be submitted by either the sender or the recipient.

Yes. Itella Corporation became Posti Group Corporation in 2015, and Itella remains Posti's brand in the Baltic countries.
