"What makes Pango different from AfterShip?" is one of the three competitor questions brands open most on our own site, next to Loop and Ingrid, so here is the answer in one place. AfterShip is the tracking name most Shopify merchants install first. Its Order Tracking app holds a 4.6 rating across 1,499 Shopify reviews with a Built for Shopify badge, connects "1,100+ carriers", and sits inside a family of separate products for returns, shipping labels, protection and notifications. It is competent, fast to set up and widely used. Treating it as a small tracking widget would be wrong, and we will not.
The real comparison is about three things: how each product is put together, what each publishes as a price, and what happens when a parcel needs a decision rather than a status. Every AfterShip fact below is quoted from AfterShip's own Shopify listing, fetched on 15 September 2026, or from figures verified on its site for our AfterShip alternatives page.
Short answer: AfterShip is a suite of post-purchase apps you assemble: Tracking (free for 50 shipments a month, then $11 and $70 a month tiers with per-shipment overage), Returns (from $19 a month), Shipping and Protection, each with its own settings and billing line, plus a read-only Tracking Copilot. Pango is one operation on one order record: carrier routing across 100+ carriers, delivery promise, branded tracking, exchange-first returns and warehouse pick and pack, with AI agents that act on delays and exceptions rather than report them, priced with a free plan and custom tiers by order volume. A brand that needs visibility and a returns portal, quickly and cheaply, is well served by AfterShip. A brand whose problem is acting on what the tracking shows, or that ships from its own warehouse with several carriers, is what Pango is built for.
How each product is put together
AfterShip is modular by design. Tracking, Returns, Shipping and Protection are distinct products. The Order Tracking listing describes its scope precisely: "a branded order tracking page and send automated shipment notifications across 1,100+ carriers", "a centralized dashboard and analytics reports" to "identify 'Where Is My Order?' (WISMO) risk before it becomes a support ticket", and an "AI-powered estimated delivery date widget" for product and checkout pages. Returns is a separate app with a portal and exchange flows. Shipping prints labels and rate-shops carriers. Each is good at its job; the seams are between them, and none of them route your outbound carriers by your rules or run your packing bench.
Pango is one order record. The same record carries the checkout delivery promise, the carrier decision, the label, the tracking events, the customer messages and the return. There is no second app to wire in when a customer wants an exchange, and no third to decide which carrier the replacement ships with. The scope is described module by module in what is multi-carrier management and pick and pack software.
Tracking
Both build branded tracking pages, send email and SMS notifications, show estimated delivery dates and normalise carrier events. AfterShip's coverage claim is "1,100+ carriers"; Pango's is 100+ prebuilt carriers with European and Nordic depth (PostNord, Bring, DPD, GLS, Evri, Colissimo) and the ability to scrape carrier data where APIs are poor. The difference is what the status is for. In AfterShip the status is information for the dashboard and the customer. In Pango a status is an operational trigger: a delay scan starts an apology message, a CS alert or a re-route, without a person reading the dashboard first. The support-volume side of that is in what is WISMO.
Returns
AfterShip Returns is a real returns product: a branded portal, exchange flows and automation rules, rated 4.7 on the Shopify App Store and priced from $19 a month on its Essentials tier at last verification. Pango's returns are exchange-first to any product in the store, not only variant swaps, with natural-language return rules compiled into per-merchant workflows, labels and customs documents for cross-border returns, and refund logic per country. The returns decision is taken by an agent when the parcel is marked for return, on the same record the outbound shipment used. The category comparison is in best returns management software.
Where AfterShip stops: the shipping label
AfterShip's shipping product prints a label and compares carrier rates. That is the edge of its reach into logistics. It does not route carriers by rule, does not fail over when a carrier's cutoff is at risk, and does not pick, pack or dispatch. Pango runs that layer: routing and rate shopping with failover, multi-warehouse fulfilment, and a pick-and-pack module with station design, scan verification and label printing at the bench. For a brand using a 3PL that never touches a label, this difference is irrelevant. For a brand with its own warehouse and two or more carriers, it is the whole difference.
The copilot answers. Pango's agents act.
AfterShip's Tracking Copilot is read-only and scoped to tracking data: ask it what happened to a shipment and it tells you. Pango's assistant is built for the operations team and executes: ask it about deliveries, returns or carrier performance across the whole operation, tell it to build a workflow or a rule, and let its agents run routine routing, messaging and exceptions. That is the structural reason the two products are priced and staffed differently, and the honest way to choose between them is to ask whether your team wants better information or fewer decisions.
What each publishes as a price
AfterShip's Shopify listing is explicit for Order Tracking:
| AfterShip Order Tracking plan | Published price | Included | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Free to install | 50 shipments a month; branded tracking page; carrier estimated delivery date | Not stated |
| Essentials | $11 a month, or $108 a year | 100 shipments a month; logo on tracking page; automatic carrier detection; email and SMS notifications | $0.08 per extra shipment |
| Premium | $70 a month, or $708 a year | 500 shipments a month; tracking page on your domain; AI-powered EDD and product recommendations; full analytics; API and webhooks | $0.12 per extra shipment |
Returns, Shipping and Protection are billed separately; Returns starts at $19 a month at last verification. A brand doing 5,000 orders a month on Premium pays the plan plus 4,500 overage shipments at $0.12, before the returns app. That is not a criticism, it is the meter, and it is how most of the category prices; the pattern is in multi-carrier shipping software pricing and returns management software pricing.
Pango has a free plan and custom pricing by order volume. There is no per-shipment overage, no separate bill for returns or protection, and no feature gate on routing, tracking, returns or the warehouse; the pricing page has the current tiers. The honest comparison: AfterShip's entry price is a number you can budget from today; Pango's paid tier is a conversation, because it covers more of the operation than a tracking plan does.

Where AfterShip fits
A brand whose bottleneck is visibility, that wants a tracking page and notifications live this afternoon, that outsources fulfilment to a 3PL, and that is happy to add a returns app when the time comes, has a strong and well-reviewed option in AfterShip. The per-shipment pricing is small at small volumes, and the carrier coverage is broad.
Where Pango fits
A brand that has outgrown reading dashboards: several carriers, a warehouse or a hands-on 3PL, cross-border returns, a support queue that spikes when the apps disagree. Pango replaces the tracking and returns apps and adds the routing and warehouse layer they never had, with agents doing the routine work. The switching path is in how long a post-purchase platform takes to implement, and the head-to-heads with the other two names from our FAQ are Pango vs Loop Returns and Ingrid alternative.
