Delhivery is India's largest private parcel network, and its tracking has two vocabularies. The order-level statuses, which Delhivery defines in its own help centre, run from "pending" to "delivered" or "RTO". Underneath them sits the scan feed, where the parcel moves in bags: "added to bag", "bag added to trip", "bag received at facility", then "out for delivery". The scan feed is what shoppers see on the tracking page, and it is the part Delhivery does not define in public. This guide explains both layers in order, quotes Delhivery's own definitions where they exist, says plainly which scans are a plain reading, and flags the few statuses that need you. Delhivery's wording is taken from its Delhivery One help centre, fetched on 2026-10-20.
Short answer: "Bag added to trip" means the sealed bag holding your parcel has been loaded onto a scheduled vehicle run toward the next Delhivery facility; the next scan is "bag received at facility" at the other end. It is normal hub-to-hub movement, not a stall. Delhivery's own definition of "out for delivery" is that the shipment "has reached the destination hub of the customer & is on the way to be delivered to the customer's address", and "delivered" is "when shipment is handed over to the customer". If an attempt fails, Delhivery's rule is up to three reattempts: "if the third attempt is also unsuccessful, the status of the shipment will move from Out for Delivery to RTO", which is return to origin. The statuses that need you are a failed attempt, an exception asking for your details, and RTO.
Delhivery's order statuses, in its own words
These are the statuses Delhivery defines for shipments in its Delhivery One help centre, in order:
| Status | Delhivery's definition | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | "Orders that are created in draft state but not yet manifested are in Pending state." | The seller has created the order but not booked the shipment |
| Ready to Ship | "Once a pending state order is manifested, it goes to Ready to Ship state & an AWB number gets assigned." | A tracking number (AWB) exists; the parcel is still with the seller |
| Ready for Pickup | "After a manifested order is added to a pickup request it goes to Ready for Pickup state." | A collection is booked; the parcel is still with the seller |
| In Transit | "When Delhivery agent picks up a Ready for Pickup shipment from the pickup location, the order goes to In Transit state." | Delhivery has the parcel; the bag and trip scans below happen here |
| Out for Delivery | "When shipment has reached the destination hub of the customer & is on the way to be delivered to the customer's address, the order will show under Out for Delivery" | On a vehicle for today's route; be reachable |
| Delivered | "When shipment is handed over to the customer it gets marked a delivered." | Done; report fast if it is not there |
| Cancelled | "An order that is canceled until its not picked goes in the Canceled stage." | Cancelled before pickup |
| RTO | "Any order which is canceled after its picked but not yet Delivered is marked as RTO." | Return to origin: the parcel is going back to the seller |
| Lost | "Any order thats gets lost in transit gets listed here." | Delhivery has declared it lost; the seller files the claim |
Delhivery's customer messages follow the same stages. Its communication service sends WhatsApp messages at "Shipment Manifested", "Shipment Picked up", "Out for delivery", "Out for delivery with OTP", "Shipment Delivered" and, when an attempt fails, "Shipment is not delivered", which starts the NDR verification described below.
The scan feed: bags and trips
Between "in transit" and "out for delivery", the Delhivery tracking page shows the parcel moving inside bags, in lines like these:
| Scan | Plain reading | What comes next |
|---|---|---|
| Added to bag | The parcel has been sealed into a bag with other parcels going to the same next facility | Bag added to trip |
| Bag added to trip | The bag has been loaded onto a scheduled vehicle run (a "trip") toward the next facility | Silence during the leg, then the arrival |
| Bag received at facility / received at facility | The bag, or the parcel, has been scanned in at the next facility | Sorting, then another bag or the delivery hub |
| Dispatched / in transit | Moving between facilities | The next arrival |
| Reached destination hub / out for delivery | At the hub that serves your address, then on a vehicle | Delivery today |
Delhivery does not publish definitions for the bag and trip lines; the readings above are the plain meaning of the words, and they match the way India Post's "item bagged", "bag dispatched" and "bag received" scans work, which is explained in item bagged meaning and bag received at facility meaning. On a long route the added-to-bag, trip, received cycle repeats at each facility, so the same lines appear more than once; that is the route, not a loop.
What "bag added to trip" means
A trip is a scheduled vehicle run between two Delhivery facilities. "Bag added to trip" means the sealed bag containing your parcel has been loaded for that run, so the parcel is about to travel. It is the Delhivery equivalent of a "departed from facility" scan. Nothing is needed from you, and the tracking page will normally be quiet until the bag is scanned in at the far end as "bag received at facility". The gap is the road leg, and it can span a day or more on long routes; worry only when the trip line is the last thing on the page for longer than the delivery estimate allows. The general reading of a departure scan, and when silence after it is a problem, is in departed from facility meaning.
"Out for delivery" and the OTP
By Delhivery's definition, "out for delivery" means the shipment has reached your destination hub and is on the way to your address, so delivery is expected the same day; it is an expectation, not a guarantee, and a route can run late. Delhivery also sends "out for delivery with OTP" on some orders: the seller has asked for a one-time password at the door, so keep the phone that received it to hand. Delhivery states that it does not require OTP or credentials for address changes, so a message asking for a code to change your address is not from Delhivery. What to do if the day ends without a parcel is in out for delivery meaning.
Delivery attempted, NDR and the three reattempts
When a delivery attempt fails, Delhivery raises a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) and, on the customer side, sends "Shipment is not delivered" for verification. Delhivery's rule for forward shipments is that the seller can opt to reattempt delivery up to three times, and "if the third attempt is also unsuccessful, the status of the shipment will move from Out for Delivery to RTO". Its NDR documentation describes WhatsApp verification, where each NDR reason has its own message and, based on your response, the shipment is reattempted or cancelled, and SmartNDR, which within the first 90 minutes tries to resolve the NDR automatically and then makes up to 3 AI call attempts at 2-hour intervals. Delhivery also names a specific case: "consignee refused" shipments, which are marked cancelled without a code or OTP validation when the receiver did not respond to the verification call.
What to do: answer the WhatsApp message or the call, because that is what triggers the reattempt; make sure someone is at the address on the next working day; and if the reason is a wrong phone number or address, correct it through the seller. The general meaning of a failed attempt is in attempted delivery meaning.
Exceptions
Delhivery documents four shipment exceptions, in its own words:
- Damaged shipments: "This exception occurs when shipments are damaged during transit."
- E-waybill missing: "This exception occurs when E-waybill is missing or has expired during transit."
- Consignee Details Required: "This exception occurs when Consignee Details (Phone or Address) is incorrect or is not reachable and needs updation." This is the one that needs you: give the seller the correct phone number and address.
- Payment Dispute: "This occurs when a shipment delivery is on hold due to dispute in the payment mode." Usually a cash-on-delivery question; confirm the payment mode with the seller.
RTO and lost
RTO, return to origin, is Delhivery's status for "any order which is canceled after its picked but not yet Delivered". It follows a third failed attempt, a cancellation after pickup, or a refusal. Once a shipment is RTO, Delhivery will not deliver it to you; the return leg goes back to the seller, and the seller reships or refunds. What a return looks like from the shopper's side is in package returned to sender meaning. "Lost" is Delhivery's status for an order that "gets lost in transit"; the claim is the seller's to file, so contact the seller.
When to act
- Pending, ready to ship or ready for pickup. The seller has the parcel. Ask the seller.
- In transit, added to bag, bag added to trip, bag received at facility. Normal movement. Wait for the destination hub.
- Out for delivery. Be reachable; have the OTP phone to hand if one was sent.
- Shipment is not delivered. Reply to the verification message or call; be available on the next working day. Three failed attempts turn the shipment into RTO.
- Consignee details required. Give the seller the correct phone number and address now.
- RTO or lost. Contact the seller for a reship or a refund.
- Delivered, nothing received. Check the address, household and neighbours, then the seller the same day; the checklist is in package says delivered but not received.

The merchant view
Delhivery gives sellers an unusually complete toolkit on the attempt side, NDR verification by WhatsApp, SmartNDR, RTO scoring, and almost nothing on the shopper side for the scans in between: "bag added to trip" is a line a customer has to guess at. A brand shipping with Delhivery and other Indian carriers sees each one's bag and hub vocabulary in its own words. The fix is translation: map the bag, trip and facility scans onto one "moving" milestone in the customer's language, and message the failed-attempt and details-required events with the next step before the customer has to ask, because on Delhivery the third silence is an RTO. Pango normalises the statuses of every connected carrier into one milestone set and treats a failed attempt or a stalled trip as the trigger for a proactive message. If this feed is generating tickets, the options to compare are in carrier management software.
The bottom line
Delhivery's defined statuses tell you who has the parcel: pending and ready to ship mean the seller, in transit means Delhivery, out for delivery means today. The bag and trip scans in between are the parcel moving and need nothing from you. The lines that need you are "shipment is not delivered", which you must answer, "consignee details required", which you must fix through the seller, and RTO, after which only the seller can help.
