'Handed Over to Local Carrier' Meaning: Who Has Your Parcel Now on SHEIN, Cainiao, AliExpress and 4PX

Cross-border parcels are carried by more than one company. The retailer's logistics provider takes the parcel out of the origin country, an airline or linehaul operator moves it, and a different company delivers it at the far end. "Handed over to local carrier" is the scan that records the last of those handovers: the parcel has been passed to the company that will bring it to your door.

That is why the status is followed by silence more often than by movement. The company that just took the parcel writes its own tracking events under its own tracking number, and the marketplace app may or may not pick them up. This page explains the handover model, the variants of the wording you will see on SHEIN, Cainiao, AliExpress, Temu and 4PX shipments, and how to keep tracking after the handover.

Short answer: Handed over to local carrier means the international leg is finished and the parcel is with the domestic delivery company in your country. AliExpress describes the model as "final-mile delivery handled locally using partnered national post services", 4PX's shipments are described as "handed over to a logistics partner who will complete the international delivery", and Temu says orders "may be handed over to local carriers for the final leg of delivery, tracking may not be available every step of the way." The next events are the local carrier's own: arrived at facility, out for delivery, delivered. If the marketplace tracking stops at the handover, find the local carrier's tracking number and track there.

The handover model

Most marketplace shipments from China run on a two- or three-carrier chain. AliExpress explains its Standard Shipping as "An integrated global fulfillment solution managed through Cainiao Logistics network, combining domestic Chinese sorting centers, international air freight partnerships, and final-mile delivery handled locally using partnered national post services", and names the final-mile examples: "Canada Post for Canadian addresses, La Poste for France, J&T Express for parts of Southeast Asia", with USPS, Royal Mail, Correos España and Australia Post among the partners.

4PX runs the same way. The tracking guide for 4PX notes that "Once the shipment leaves China, it is handed over to a logistics partner who will complete the international delivery for 4PX. This means that tracking 4PX's international shipments is not always" complete in one place.

Every handover in that chain can produce a "handed over" scan, and the wording tells you which handover just happened.

The variants, and which handover each one is

WordingWhich handoverWhat it means for you
"Handed over to international carrier"Origin forwarder to the linehaul operatorThe parcel is leaving the origin country. Days of transit follow.
"The goods have been handed over to the airline" (SHEIN)Forwarder to the air carrierSame stage, said more precisely. The SHEIN guides call the preceding step "Accepted at airline's distributing center".
"Handed over to carrier / left for destination" (SHEIN)Forwarder to linehaul, with departureThe parcel has left the origin hub for the destination country.
"Being handed over by customs" (Temu)Customs release to the domestic carrierClearance is done and the parcel is passing to the local network.
"Handed over to local carrier" / "handed over to LM carrier" (SHEIN, Cainiao)Linehaul or clearance facility to the last-mile carrierThe company that will deliver now has it. LM means last mile.
"Your package will soon be handed over to the domestic courier company" (AliExpress)Same handover, announced in advanceThe domestic carrier has been assigned; the physical handover is pending.
"Handed over to last mile" (4PX)Same handoverAs above.

The one that matters most is the last: it is the point where the tracking number you have been watching stops being the useful one.

Why tracking goes quiet after the handover

Temu says it plainly on its shipping page: orders "may be handed over to local carriers for the final leg of delivery, tracking may not be available every step of the way." AliExpress warns that "Courier websites often lag in updating tracking information. For example, China Post may take 3–5 days to reflect a shipment's status."

Two mechanics cause the gap. The local carrier's first scan happens when the parcel is processed at its depot, which can be a day or two after the handover, especially for postal operators that receive consolidated bags. And the local carrier's events are written under its own number, which the marketplace app shows only if it has mapped the two numbers. When it has not, the app stays on "handed over" while the parcel is already on a van.

How to keep tracking after the handover

  1. Find the local number. SHEIN and Temu show the last-mile carrier and its tracking number on the order page once assigned. AliExpress orders on Standard Shipping can be tracked on Cainiao's own site, which the AliExpress guide recommends for the full chain of scans.
  2. Track on the local carrier's site. The carrier's own page is authoritative for the delivery day and any attempt. The status vocabularies of the common last-mile carriers are in carrier tracking statuses.
  3. Give the first local scan two business days. A handover on Friday often produces its first domestic scan on Monday or Tuesday.
  4. Escalate through the seller after a week. If neither number has moved in seven days, the seller is the carrier's customer and can open a trace. Marketplace timelines for missing parcels are in SHEIN tracking statuses, Temu tracking statuses and AliExpress tracking statuses.

"Handed over" and customs: which comes first?

For parcels that need clearance, the sequence is linehaul handover, arrival in the destination country, customs, then the handover to the local carrier. The Cainiao string "customs clearance handed over to local carrier" compresses the last two into one line. If the handover scan is missing and the tracking sits at a customs line instead, the parcel has not been released yet; that stage is explained in awaiting customs clearance meaning and what follows release in customs clearance completed meaning.

For merchants: the handover is where tracking breaks

Every cross-border order has a handover, and the handover is where the customer's tracking link stops answering. The support ticket that follows is not "where is my order", it is "your tracking stopped working", which is worse for trust and just as expensive.

Pango connects to more than 100 carriers through prebuilt connectors and stitches the linehaul and last-mile tracking numbers onto one order record, so the customer's tracking page continues past the handover with the local carrier's scans instead of stopping at "handed over". The cross-border handover is one of the proactive notification points on that page, alongside placed, shipped, delayed and delivered, and a parcel whose first local scan is late for the lane is flagged to the operations team before the customer writes. The wider set of lane-level metrics that make that possible is in carrier performance metrics.

The bottom line

Handed over to local carrier means the parcel is with the company that will deliver it, and that company writes its own tracking under its own number. If the marketplace app goes quiet, that is the reason, not a lost parcel. Find the local number, give it two business days, and escalate through the seller after a week. Brands that want the handover stitched into one tracking page so customers never hit the gap can see Pango's order tracking or book a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how Pango works, and what switching looks like.

The international leg is finished and the parcel has been passed to the delivery company in your country. The next events are that carrier's own scans.

The opposite end of the journey: the origin forwarder has passed the parcel to the linehaul or air carrier, and it is leaving the origin country.

The parcel has been handed to the air carrier for the international flight. It is the same stage as "handed over to international carrier".

Customs has released the parcel and it is passing to the domestic carrier for delivery.

No marketplace publishes a figure. The rest is the local carrier's normal transit, usually days. Give the first local scan two business days.

The local carrier's scans are on its own tracking number, and the marketplace app may not show them. Find that number on the order page and track on the carrier's site.
