Every December the same searches climb: "asos christmas returns", "extended returns", "how long do I have to return a gift". The answers sit on each retailer's own returns page and differ by a month or more. This page collects the 2026 Christmas returns windows exactly as the retailers publish them, read on 8 November 2026, and says plainly where a retailer has not yet published this year's dates. Nothing is carried over from last year and no date is guessed.
Short answer: As of 8 November 2026, thirteen of the retailers checked have published a 2026 window on their own pages, and the end dates cluster: 5 January 2027 (Boohoo and PrettyLittleThing for orders from 29 October, Next for purchases from 23 October), 17 January (Marks and Spencer for full-price items from 22 October, H&M UK from 1 November), 23 January (John Lewis, gifts bought from 1 October) and 31 January (Argos from 23 September, Amazon UK and Gymshark from 1 November, Amazon US, Walmart). Target's window opens on 26 December; Best Buy covers 30 October to 31 December with returns to 15 January; adidas US gives 60 days on orders from 29 October. ASOS, Zara, Apple, Oh Polly, SHEIN and Temu had not published a 2026 window when we read their pages, so their standard windows apply. JD Sports, Nike and adidas UK could not be read outside a browser and are not guessed at.
Christmas returns 2026: what each retailer has published
Each row quotes the retailer's own returns, help or corporate page, read on 8 November 2026. "Not published for 2026" means the page carried no seasonal window that day, so the standard window applies. Where no method we have could read a page, the row says so.
| Retailer | Extended window (as published) | Purchases from | Return by | Source read date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASOS | Not published for 2026 as of 8 Nov 2026 (the returns hub lists eight FAQs, none seasonal). Standard: "You have 28 days from the date your order was delivered or made available for collection to return it." | n/a | 28 days from delivery | 8 Nov 2026 |
| Boohoo | "Extended Christmas Returns: Orders placed from Oct 29, 2026 have until until Jan 5, 2027 to return their order." (as written) | 29 Oct 2026 | 5 Jan 2027 | 8 Nov 2026 |
| PrettyLittleThing | Returns page: "Orders placed from Oct 29, 2026 have until until Jan 5, 2027 to return their order" (as written). Its policy page says instead "orders placed between 7 November and 5 January are eligible for an extended returns window. You may create a return up until 23:59 on 5 January." | 29 Oct 2026 (7 Nov on the policy page) | 5 Jan 2027 | 8 Nov 2026 |
| JD Sports | Could not be read on 8 Nov 2026: the returns and FAQ pages render only navigation and a "Christmas 2026" banner outside a browser session. No window is stated here; delivery options are on JD Sports delivery times | not confirmed | not confirmed | 8 Nov 2026 (unreadable) |
| Next | "items ordered online or purchased in a Next store between Friday 23rd October 2026 and Friday 25th December 2026 can be returned after Christmas and up to and including Tuesday 5th January 2027." | John Lewis | "Any gift bought between 1st October 2026 and 24 December 2026 can be returned up until 23 January 2027, if it's unwanted or unsuitable." For December order cut-offs, the delivery pages sit beside this table: ASOS delivery times, Boohoo delivery times and PrettyLittleThing delivery times.
How Christmas returns usually work
The pattern is the same wherever a retailer publishes one: a purchase window is named (Argos opens it on 23 September, John Lewis on 1 October, Amazon on 1 November) and anything bought inside it can be returned up to a fixed January date instead of the usual 14, 28 or 30 days. Outside the window the standard policy applies; Next says so in both directions: "Any items returned on or before Thursday 24th December 2026 are subject to our Standard Returns Policy" and "Any items returned after Tuesday 5th January 2027 will be subject to our Standard Returns Policy."
Three things do not change. Condition rules stay (Next: "unused, in the original packaging (if appropriate) and still have the tags attached"). Excluded categories stay excluded and some keep a shorter window: Marks and Spencer keeps "14 days to return Sale items", Next excludes "Outlet/Clearance Stores and Christmas decorations", Target gives Apple, Beats and phones 14 days rather than 30. And statutory rights sit underneath; Argos: "This doesn't affect your legal rights if something is faulty or if you decide to cancel your order." The extension changes the window, not the refund: Argos still asks you to "allow 14 days to be refunded".
Gift returns and gift receipts
Only what the retailers' pages say. John Lewis: "Please ask for a gift receipt in store so that the recipient can also return the present", and for the recipient, "You can return or exchange gifts in a store using the returns note and label that came with the order. We'll either exchange the item or refund the value to a gift card." Next: "If you've received a gift that isn't quite right, don't worry, simply bring it into one of our Next stores. We'll be happy to offer you either an exchange or a refund card for the value of the returned item." Marks and Spencer: "If you have a gift receipt or want a credit receipt, you'll need to return it to one of our UK stores." Amazon US tells recipients to use the order number "on your packing slip that came with your item or on the digital gift receipt", and "If you can't locate the order number, ask the gift giver." Apple US: "For returns with a gift receipt, Apple will offer you an Apple Gift Card." The common thread: without a gift receipt the money goes back to whoever paid; with one, the recipient gets an exchange, a gift card or a credit receipt, usually in a store.
How to return a gift step by step
- Find the proof. A gift receipt, the returns note in the parcel, or the order number from the giver. Without any of them, expect store credit at best.
- Check the window in the table, and what it runs from: the purchase date (most UK retailers), the delivery date (Boohoo, PrettyLittleThing, Oh Polly, SHEIN) or a fixed start such as Target's 26 December.
- Keep it unused, tagged and boxed. Every retailer above inspects returns; hygiene-sealed items are excluded almost everywhere once opened.
- Start the return where the retailer says. A returns portal for online orders, the store for gifts.
- Take the outcome offered. Exchange, gift card or credit receipt; a cash refund usually goes only to the original payment method.
- Keep proof of postage and allow the stated processing time before chasing.
For merchants
A Christmas window has to land in three places at once: the policy page, the returns portal that enforces it, and the team answering "can I still return this?". Pango is an AI-native, agentic operating system for e-commerce logistics; in it returns, exchanges and claims run on rules written in natural language and compiled into per-merchant workflows, so "orders placed from 29 October can be returned until 5 January" is a rule change rather than a build, with refund logic and labels per country, exchanges into any product in the store, and branded tracking that follows the return parcel. How to write the policy is in how to write a return policy; the software category that enforces it is in returns management software.
The bottom line
Thirteen retailers on this page have published a 2026 Christmas returns window, with end dates on 5, 17, 23 and 31 January 2027. ASOS, Zara, Apple, Oh Polly, SHEIN and Temu have not, so their standard windows apply; JD Sports, Nike and adidas UK could not be read outside a browser and are not guessed at. Check the purchase window as carefully as the return-by date, keep gifts tagged and boxed, and ask for a gift receipt at the till.
Updated 8 November 2026. This page is revised as retailers publish or change their 2026 windows; the read date in each row is the day the retailer's page was last checked.
