OnTrac is the regional carrier a lot of US shoppers meet without choosing it. Retailers hand it parcels for the final leg, the tracking page shows a carrier name they have never heard of, and the statuses sit there for a day. This guide explains each OnTrac status in plain English, what OnTrac's own help says about delivery times, why a LaserShip tracking number now shows up as OnTrac, and the one rule for when to act.
Short answer: An OnTrac parcel runs "label created" (OnTrac has the data, not the parcel), "package received at the facility" (it is in OnTrac's network), "in transit" (moving between facilities), "out for delivery" (arriving today) and "delivered". OnTrac's FAQ says residential parcels "typically arrive between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m." on the scheduled day, with Saturday and Sunday delivery in select areas, and that "if your status has not changed in 3 business days, please contact your retailer". Exception statuses such as "address correction required" and "customer not available" are the ones that need you.
OnTrac statuses in English
| Status | What it means | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Label created, tracking details will be available once the package arrives at the OnTrac facility | The retailer has created the shipment; OnTrac has not received the parcel yet | None. If it sits for days, the parcel has not left the retailer |
| Package received at the facility | In OnTrac's network and being processed | None |
| Package received after cutoff | Received after the day's processing cut-off; it moves the next processing day | None, expect a one-day shift |
| In transit | Moving between OnTrac facilities toward your area | None |
| Out for delivery | With the driver for delivery today | Be reachable until the evening |
| Delivered | Done | Check the delivery location detail if you do not have it |
| Delivery attempted / Customer not available | The driver came and could not deliver | Expect a reattempt; check for instructions |
| Address correction required | OnTrac cannot deliver to the address as given | Contact the retailer to correct it fast |
| Damaged in transit | The parcel was damaged | Contact the retailer for a replacement or refund |
| Returned to sender | Going back to the retailer | Contact the retailer |
The normal OnTrac sequence
Label created. OnTrac's own wording is "LABEL CREATED, TRACKING DETAILS WILL BE AVAILABLE ONCE THE PACKAGE ARRIVES AT THE ONTRAC FACILITY". It means exactly that: the retailer has booked the shipment, the parcel is still with the retailer or in a handover, and OnTrac cannot show anything until it scans the box. The general version is in what "shipping label created" means.
Package received at the facility. The parcel is physically in OnTrac's network. A variant, "package received after cutoff", means it arrived after the day's processing deadline and will move on the next processing day.
In transit. Between OnTrac facilities. OnTrac is a regional network, so this stage is usually short, a day or two.
Out for delivery. On the truck for today. OnTrac's FAQ is specific about hours: "Packages to residences typically arrive between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. in your local time zone on your scheduled date of delivery." That evening window is later than most shoppers expect, so a parcel that has not arrived at 6 p.m. is not late. See what "out for delivery" means.
Delivered. OnTrac records the delivery. If you do not have it, check porches, side doors, mailrooms and neighbours before raising a claim, per package says delivered but not received.
The statuses that need you
Delivery attempted / customer not available. The driver could not complete the delivery. OnTrac normally reattempts; the tracking or the retailer's notification says when.
Address correction required. The address as given cannot be delivered to. Because OnTrac is working for the retailer, the correction usually has to come through the retailer, so contact them as soon as this appears; an uncorrected address ends in "returned to sender". The pattern across carriers is in what "insufficient address" means.
Damaged in transit. Contact the retailer, not OnTrac; the retailer holds the contract and issues the replacement.
Weekends, coverage and the LaserShip name
OnTrac's FAQ notes that "select service areas provide deliveries Saturdays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.", so weekend delivery is market-dependent rather than universal. Independent carrier guides put OnTrac's reach at about 70% of the US population across 31 states and Washington DC, with no service to Alaska, Hawaii or international addresses.
If your tracking number came from LaserShip and you cannot find that carrier any more, that is because LaserShip acquired OnTrac in October 2021 and the combined network took the OnTrac name. Legacy LaserShip-format tracking numbers are still in use across the eastern part of the network and track on OnTrac's site.
How long is normal, and when to act
Regional carriers move fast once they have the parcel: received to delivered in one to three days is typical. The one rule OnTrac itself gives is the one to use: "Generally, if your status has not changed in 3 business days, please contact your retailer for assistance." Note the word retailer. OnTrac's contract is with the shipper, so the shipper is who can open a trace, authorise a reship, or fix an address.
The merchant view
For a brand using OnTrac, the ticket pattern is predictable: "who is OnTrac", "label created for three days", and "out for delivery but it is 7 p.m.". Every one of those is a message the tracking page could have sent first: an explanation of the carrier at handover, a nudge when a label sits unscanned, and a note that OnTrac delivers until 9 p.m. The address-correction status is the one that costs money, because it turns into a return if nobody acts within a day or two.
Pango normalises OnTrac and 100+ other carriers into one milestone set, messages the evening delivery window and the failed-attempt scan automatically, and raises an address exception to the team the moment it appears rather than when the parcel comes back. What that saves in support volume is in what is WISMO.
The bottom line
OnTrac's statuses are simple once you know the network: label created is not received, received is in the network, out for delivery runs until 9 p.m., and the retailer, not OnTrac, is who to call after three quiet business days. For merchants, message the evening window and act on address exceptions the day they appear. See the post-purchase operations platform and book a demo.
