Mercari Shipping and Tracking Explained: Order Statuses, Transit Times and the 72-Hour Rule

Mercari is a marketplace, not a carrier, so its tracking is really two things stitched together: the Order Status page inside the app, which moves through Mercari's own stages, and the carrier tracking behind it, which belongs to USPS, UPS or FedEx. Most confusion comes from mixing the two up. This guide explains each stage of a Mercari order, quotes Mercari's own US help centre for the deadlines and protections, and lists exactly what to do when tracking stalls, says delivered too early, or shows the parcel heading back.

Short answer: After you buy, the seller has 3 business days to ship. Once they mark it shipped, a Mercari prepaid label parcel takes 3 to 4 days on average to arrive, and you follow it from the Order Status page. When the carrier confirms delivery you have 72 hours to rate the order or request a return, which is what releases payment to the seller. If tracking says delivered and you have nothing, contact Mercari within those 72 hours. If a parcel has had no scan for 30 or more days, file a Lost in Transit claim rather than cancelling.

The stages of a Mercari order

Mercari does not publish a formal status glossary, but its help centre describes each stage of the transaction. Read together, an order moves through:

StageWhat it meansYour move
Purchased, waiting for the seller to shipPayment taken. Mercari asks sellers "to ship orders within 3 business days of purchase"Wait; message the seller after 3 business days
ShippedThe seller tapped "I Shipped It" on their Order Status page. With a Mercari prepaid label, tracking is attached automatically; with a seller's own label, tracking appears when they add itOpen the carrier tracking from the Order Status page
In transit (carrier tracking)The parcel is moving through USPS, UPS or FedExJudge by the estimated delivery date, not scan frequency
DeliveredThe carrier recorded delivery. A 72-hour window startsCheck the item, then rate, or request a return, within 72 hours
Rated / completedYou rated the order and payment was released to the sellerDone. Sales are final after completion
CancelledThe transaction was cancelled, for example because a no-tracking order never arrivedRefund follows

Mercari prepaid labels are available for USPS, UPS and FedEx shipments, "include tracking automatically and offer fixed rates for shipments to and from the 50 states". They do not ship to APO or FPO addresses, and if you need delivery to a P.O. Box, Mercari says to ask the seller to switch the carrier to USPS.

How long Mercari shipping takes

Mercari's help centre gives an average: "An item shipped with a Mercari prepaid label will take 3 - 4 days, on average, to arrive at your doorstep after the seller ships it." Its delayed-package article breaks that down by service, excluding Sundays and federal holidays:

Carrier and serviceTransit timeDelivery days
USPS First-Class and Priority Mail1 to 5 daysMonday to Saturday
UPS Ground1 to 6 daysMonday to Friday
UPS Ground Saver2 to 8 daysMonday to Friday
FedEx Home1 to 6 daysTuesday to Saturday
FedEx Ground Economy2 to 8 daysTuesday to Saturday

Add the seller's shipping window to those ranges. A seller who uses the full 3 business days and a Ground Saver label can legitimately take close to two weeks from purchase to doorstep. For what the individual carrier scans mean along the way, see USPS, UPS and FedEx tracking statuses.

Tracking has not updated

Mercari's first advice is to check the carrier's own tracking page, because "Tracking updates can take time, especially during high-volume periods or service disruptions." Two Mercari-specific thresholds matter:

  • Seller shipped on their own with no tracking number. Mercari says to "wait until 15 days after purchase for the order to be delivered", then request a refund from the Order Status page if it has not arrived. Sellers sometimes confirm shipment and forget to add the number, so message them first.
  • No scan for 30 or more days. If you cannot locate the package "and there hasn't been a tracking update for 30 or more days from the most recent scan, you can file a Lost in Transit claim and request a refund from the Help Center. Do not request to cancel the order."

Between those points, the general reasons a parcel goes quiet are covered in why is my package stuck in transit.

Tracking says delivered, but nothing arrived

Mercari's guidance follows the standard pattern with one hard deadline. First, "Look around your property", ask neighbours and household members, look for an attempted-delivery notice and contact the carrier; for USPS parcels the local Post Office may be able to check "GPS scan information, delivery photos when available". Mercari also notes that "some packages may show as delivered while still in transit", so waiting up to 48 hours is reasonable.

Then the deadline: "If you still can't find the package, contact Mercari within 72 hours of the delivery scan. This is important because once a transaction is completed, all sales are final and Mercari may no longer be able to process a refund." Mercari may pause the transaction and investigate with the carrier, reviewing "delivery photos, geo-location scans, the delivery address, and the shipping label". If delivery is confirmed, funds go to the seller; if it cannot be confirmed, the buyer may be refunded. The broader playbook is in package says delivered but not received.

The 72-hour rating window

Rating is how Mercari closes a transaction. "After you've confirmed the item you've received is as described in the listing, you can rate the order to release payment to the seller", from the Order Status page via "I've received my item". The rule: "You have 72 hours from the carrier-confirmed delivery date to rate the order or request a return." That is also why the delivered-not-received deadline is 72 hours: after the window the transaction completes on its own.

Returned to sender, exceptions and weather

Returned to sender. Mercari says the buyer should message the seller to ask whether they will reship with a new tracking number; "The original shipping label can't be reused." If the seller cannot reship, they cancel so the buyer can repurchase. Check your address on the account before buying again. The carrier side of this is in package returned to sender.

FedEx Delivery Exception. If FedEx shows a Delivery Exception and final delivery cannot be completed, Mercari asks you to contact it through the Help Center, and warns that "Items that are not claimed within 10 days may be destroyed." What an exception means in general is in what does delivery exception mean.

Weather and carrier disruptions. Mercari points to the carriers' service alerts and notes that storms can delay pickup, tracking updates and delivery timing.

Shipping Protection

Every Mercari prepaid label includes Shipping Protection: if the package is lost or damaged in transit by the carrier, cover is "up to $200 for standard, economy, and Media Mail shipments and up to $20 for First Class Envelopes". The conditions matter. The parcel must be shipped on a Mercari prepaid label, tracking must show "that the carrier received the item within 3 calendar days from the purchase date", the label's weight class and size must cover the package, and the seller must not try to redirect it after shipment. Sellers who ship on their own labels are not covered: Mercari "will not be able to initiate a payout or investigate the transaction" for a lost self-shipped parcel and suggests carrier insurance instead.

The merchant view

Resale marketplaces such as Mercari set the expectations your customers bring to your own store: ship within days, tracking attached automatically, a clear rule for what happens when the parcel goes missing, and a fixed window that closes the transaction. Brands rarely publish rules that explicit, and the gap shows up as WISMO tickets.

Pango gives a DTC brand the same discipline without the marketplace: one order record, labels printed at the bench with tracking attached, proactive messages when a scan is overdue for the lane, and a returns flow that opens from the tracking page rather than a support ticket. What that removes in support load is in what is WISMO.

The bottom line

Mercari's tracking is the carrier's tracking plus four rules of Mercari's own: 3 business days for the seller to ship, 3 to 4 days average in transit, 72 hours after delivery to rate or return, and 30 scanless days before a Lost in Transit claim. Know those and the Order Status page reads itself. For brands who want the same clarity on their own orders, see the post-purchase operations platform and book a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how Pango works, and what switching looks like.

Mercari asks sellers to ship within 3 business days of purchase. Message the seller if nothing has moved after that.

On average 3 to 4 days after the seller ships with a Mercari prepaid label. By service, USPS First-Class and Priority run 1 to 5 days, UPS Ground and FedEx Home 1 to 6, and UPS Ground Saver and FedEx Ground Economy 2 to 8, excluding Sundays and federal holidays.

You have 72 hours from the carrier-confirmed delivery to rate the order or request a return. Rating releases payment to the seller; after the window the sale is final.

Check the delivery area, neighbours and household, contact the carrier, and if it is still missing contact Mercari within 72 hours of the delivery scan so the transaction can be paused and investigated.

Mercari says not to cancel. If there has been no tracking update for 30 or more days from the last scan, file a Lost in Transit claim and request a refund from the Help Center.

Prepaid labels do not ship to APO or FPO addresses. For a P.O. Box, ask the seller to switch the label carrier to USPS.
