Return Prime is one of the best-liked returns apps on Shopify, and the numbers say so: 4.8 stars across 768 reviews, a Built for Shopify badge, and a listing that has been live since October 2020. It gives a small store "a branded return portal that connects to your WMS, carriers and helpdesk", rules to "auto-approve or reject returns with reason, product and return window", exchanges, store credit, printed and QR return labels, and even "EU-compliant withdrawal support". The entry price is free.
Brands searching "Return Prime alternative" have usually read the fine print on the meter. The free plan covers 5 requests a month and charges $0.49 for each one after that. Grow is $19.99 for 60 requests, Thrive AI $79.99 for 180, Scale $149.99 for 450 or more, each with a per-request overage of $0.49 to $0.79. Exchanges for a different product sit on the top tier. And the app lives only on Shopify, and only on the return. Pango is the alternative for brands whose returns have outgrown a portal and need to run inside the same operation as the delivery.
What Return Prime does well
From their own pages, and worth conceding fully:
- Loved by small merchants. 4.8 across 768 reviews with a Built for Shopify badge is a strong signal, and the free tier lets a store try it with no commitment.
- Real rules. "Auto-approve or reject returns with rules on reason, product and return window", plus pro-rated refunds for buy-X-get-Y orders.
- Exchanges and credit. Variant exchanges, replacements, "Refund to Store Credit", and an AI tier that promises to steer refunds into exchanges.
- Labels and tracking. "Generate return labels, track shipments and send status updates automatically", with print and QR options from the Grow plan.
- Integrations. "Integrates with 100+ WMS and logistics tools", multi-language portals, and explicit EU withdrawal support.
For a Shopify store handling a few dozen returns a month, Return Prime is a sensible, well-built portal.
Where the meter runs out
The first issue is arithmetic. Per-request pricing looks cheap until a fashion brand hits a return rate of 25% on a few thousand orders. At the App Store's listed rates, every return past the plan cap costs $0.49 to $0.79, and the caps are small: 5, 60, 180, 450. Return Prime's own website shows different figures on its pricing page (Grow and Thrive AI at $100 a month for 200 returns), which is itself a reason to get the number in writing before you sign.
The second is gating. Exchanging for a different product, the exchange that actually rescues revenue, is a Scale-plan feature on Return Prime's pricing page. Lower tiers offer same-variant exchanges. Return labels with print and QR start at Grow, not free.
The third is scope. Return Prime is "currently available on Shopify app store" and it is a returns portal. The outbound delivery that caused the return, the carrier choice, the customer's delivery message and the warehouse work the return creates are all other tools. The portal is good; the seams around it are where the tickets come from.

The outgrow moment
The tell is the invoice line that scales with your worst month. Returns spike after peak, the per-request overage spikes with them, and the exchange that would have saved the sale needs the plan you did not buy.
The answer is to run the return where the delivery already lives. At Switch Nails, returns on the same record as carriers and tracking meant 19% of returns stayed as an exchange or store credit, exchangers repurchased at 33% against 20% for refund-takers, and 99% of returns ran self-serve. The method is in how to increase your exchange rate. Return Prime sits with Loop, ReturnGO and AfterShip Returns in our best Shopify returns apps guide and the wider best returns management software roundup.
Who should stay with Return Prime
If you run a Shopify store with a few dozen returns a month, your carriers and warehouse are settled, and you want a well-rated portal for free or $19.99, Return Prime is a good choice. The alternative is for brands where returns are hundreds a month, where the exchange to a different product is the money, and where the return should be one step in the operation rather than a separate app.
