AfterShip Returns is the returns app inside the AfterShip suite, and it is a good one: a portal with exchange flows, rules that approve the routine returns automatically, and store credit as a resolution. The reason people search for an alternative is rarely that the app is bad. It is that returns are one piece of a post-purchase operation, and in AfterShip's model every piece is a separate product with its own settings and its own billing line. This page sets out what AfterShip Returns does and costs, where the modular model stops, and what nine alternatives publish as their price and scope.
Short answer: AfterShip Returns starts around $19 a month on its Essentials tier, with plans banded by returns per month ("growing stores" under 100, "established brands" 100 to 400, "global brands" 400 and up). It approves eligible returns by rule, pushes exchanges and store credit ahead of refunds, and can auto-create exchange orders from delivery statuses. The alternatives split into Shopify portals priced by returns volume (Loop, ReturnGO, Return Prime, 8returns, yayloh), a shopper-funded model (Redo), quote-only networks (Happy Returns, Narvar), and an operation that runs returns, exchanges, tracking and carriers on one order record (Pango). Pick by where your returns actually break: the portal, the exchange, or the hand-off to the warehouse and the carrier.
What AfterShip Returns does well
From AfterShip's own product and pricing pages:
- Rules-based approval. "Rules approve eligible returns instantly and route the rest", with "no manual review for the 80% of returns you'd approve anyway". Higher tiers add "multi-step conditional approval flows" and exception handling built for the jump from "100+ returns/month" to "500+".
- Exchanges and store credit first. The portal is designed as a "streamlined returns experience with multiple conversion points to encourage product exchanges", with "incentivized exchanges and refund-to-store credits" as resolutions.
- Automation on delivery status. It can "auto-create exchange orders based on delivery statuses", so the replacement ships when the return is scanned rather than when it is received.
- Paid return labels. "Shoppers can pay a small fee to unlock free return labels later", AfterShip's way of letting a brand "offer free returns without eating the cost".
- Branding. A custom domain for the returns page and the option to remove AfterShip branding from emails and pages sit on the higher tiers.
Its Shopify App Store rating is 4.7, and the common view from merchants is accurate: for a store whose problem is the returns portal, AfterShip Returns solves it.
What AfterShip Returns costs
AfterShip bands the plans by returns per month rather than by features alone: "growing stores" at under 100 returns per month, "established brands" at 100 to 400, and "global brands" at 400 and up. The Essentials tier starts around $19 a month, the figure carried from returns management software pricing, where every vendor's current published price is kept up to date. Two things to model before you sign: what happens to the bill in your peak month, when the returns band you bought is exceeded, and what the other AfterShip products you will need cost on top, because the returns plan does not include tracking or shipping.
Where a modular suite stops
AfterShip's model is modular by design: Tracking, Returns, Shipping, and Protection are distinct products you assemble. To cover tracking, returns, shipping labels and protection, you end up buying and wiring together several separate AfterShip products, each with its own settings, its own billing line, and its own view of the order. That is fine while the store is small enough for one person to hold the whole picture in their head. It stops being fine when a customer's exchange depends on a delivery status that lives in a different product, when the warehouse needs the return and the replacement on one record, or when the carrier that collects the return is chosen by a rule the returns app cannot see. The general version of that argument, for the whole suite, is in AfterShip alternatives.

How to choose
Returns software is priced in five shapes: a monthly plan with a returns cap and a per-return overage, a monthly plan by volume band, a per-return meter from the first return, a shopper-funded fee at checkout, and an enterprise quote. AfterShip Returns is the second shape. Before swapping it for another portal of the same shape, ask whether the portal is the problem:
- If customers abandon the return flow or take refunds instead of exchanges, the portal and the exchange design are the problem. Loop, ReturnGO and AfterShip Returns itself all compete here, and the exchange flow is the thing to test.
- If returns are approved fine but take weeks to resolve, the problem is the hand-off: the return label, the carrier, the warehouse receipt and the refund trigger. That is an operations problem, and a portal cannot fix it, whichever logo is on it.
- If the bill is the problem, model the peak month, not the average month, against each vendor's cap and overage.
- If customers are outside the US or on several carriers, check the carrier and country coverage before the feature list; a Return Bar network or a single-carrier label integration does not travel.
The twelve questions to put to any returns vendor, including the ones that expose the hand-off gaps, are in how to choose returns management software.
Where Pango is different
Pango runs returns exchange-first: a customer can exchange into any product in the catalogue, not only another size or colour, or take store credit instead of a refund, and the rules are written per merchant, in plain language, per country. The return and the replacement order sit on the same record as the original shipment, so the warehouse sees one thing, the carrier for the return is chosen by rule, and the refund or the replacement is triggered by the return scan rather than by a box being opened. It works on more than 100 carriers through prebuilt connectors rather than a single network, which is what makes it travel outside the US. Free for DTC brands: Pango runs the shipping and returns audit on your own order and carrier data as part of a demo. The ranked comparison of the whole category is in best returns management software.
