Shippo describes itself in one line: "Your one-stop solution for shipping labels." That honesty is why it works. A Shopify or Wix store connects it, compares rates across "40+ global carriers", prints a label, and is shipping in an afternoon. The Starter plan is free for up to 30 labels a month, Pro is $17 a month, and Shippo claims "4.6M+ customers", "200M+ shipments annually" and "up to 90% off retail rates". On the Shopify App Store it has been listed since February 2014 and holds 4.2 stars across 318 reviews.
Brands searching "Shippo alternative" have usually stopped having a label problem. They have a delivery problem, a returns problem and a support inbox, and Shippo was never built to run those. Its returns feature is a return label. Its tracking is a branded page with notification emails, on Pro and above. What happens when a parcel stalls, a customer wants an exchange, or a carrier has a bad week is your team's job. Pango is the alternative for brands that want the operation after the label run as one system.
What Shippo does well
From their own pages, and worth conceding plainly:
- Free to start, cheap to stay. Starter is free for up to 30 labels a month. Pro is "$17/mo" or "$205/year", and Premier is on request with unlimited shipments.
- Carrier discounts without a contract. "Best USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL Express discounts" on every plan, and your own carrier accounts are allowed on all plans (5 cents a label on Starter, free on Pro and Premier).
- Real automation. The Shopify listing promises to "bulk-print labels and automate carrier, service, and package selections". That is a rules engine, and it counts.
- A developer-grade API. Shippo's Shipping API is the reason many platforms embed it rather than build their own carrier connections.
- Return labels on every plan. Including the free one.
For a small store shipping a few hundred parcels a month with USPS and UPS, Shippo is the right size.
Where a label tool runs out
The first limit is scope. Shippo's returns are labels: "Create return labels and keep customers informed with branded tracking updates." There is no exchange flow, no store credit, no rules deciding whether a return is approved, no replacement order. The label prints; the rest is a conversation.
The second is the meter. Pro is tiered by monthly labels from "1-200" up to "5,001-10,000", and past 10,000 labels a month the price is "$0.08 per label". Branded tracking pages, notification emails and packing slips are Pro-and-up features, so the free tier is labels only.
The third is that nothing acts. Shippo automates the choice at label time and then stops. It does not message the customer when a parcel stalls, reroute volume when a carrier degrades, or turn a refund request into an exchange. There is no AI product on its platform pages at all.
Shippo vs Pango
| Shippo | Pango | |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Shipping labels, rate comparison and shipping API | Post-purchase operations platform with AI agents |
| Pricing | Starter free (30 labels), Pro $17 a month tiered by labels, Premier on request | Free plan, paid custom by order volume, no per-label meter |
| Carriers | 40+ (vendor's claim), own accounts on all plans | 100+ prebuilt connectors, own contracts on every plan |
| Routing | Automated carrier, service and package selection at label time | Routing and rate shopping as part of the operation, failover when a carrier degrades |
| Tracking | Branded tracking pages and emails on Pro and above | Normalised tracking across carriers, proactive delay messaging on the order record |
| Returns | Return labels | Exchange-first returns to any product, replacement order created in the system |
| Warehouse | Packing slips | Pick and pack on the same record as routing and returns |
| AI | None described | Agents that route, message and resolve; assistant that changes rules in a prompt |
The outgrow moment
It arrives quietly. The label bill is fine; the tickets are not. "Where is my order" and "can I swap this for a size up" pile up, each one answered by a person reading a carrier site, because the tool that printed the label has no idea what happened next.
The fix is not a bigger label tool. It is putting the carrier choice, the tracking message and the return on the same record, so a stalled parcel becomes an action instead of a ticket. That is the line between shipping software and an operation, drawn out in what multi-carrier management is. Shippo sits alongside EasyPost, ShipStation and Sendcloud in our best multi-carrier shipping software roundup, and the cost of the tickets it leaves behind is in what is WISMO.
Who should stay with Shippo
If you ship under a few hundred parcels a month, want carrier discounts without a contract, and your customers rarely need anything after the label, Shippo is excellent and nearly free. If you are a developer embedding shipping into your own product, its API is the point. The alternative is for brands whose problems now start after the label prints.
